I never knew how much love a heart could hold, until they called me mom

Christmas Cookies

I did manage to get ambitious one day an make a ton of cookies. The kids had a great time decorating and eating them. The funnest part is when Caitlyn and Jace came over and Caitlyn got in on the decorating. She and the kids had a contest to see who made the cutest cookie. Thayne had been resting in the bedroom and they all came in with excited anticipation on their faces to see who he would choose! Including Caitlyn. Thayne told me later he thought it was the funnest thing to see how amazing Cait is with the kids and how cute it was that she came in with them just as excited to see who he would pick! Gotta love a sweet girl like that! This has been a hectic time of year but it was wonderful to hear them laughing and playing and even the mess was worth it!

And don't mind the laundry in the background. We had been washing cflothes all day and folded them later that night... but here are the contestants and their cookies! What great decorators they all are!!!
Kami and Nate, best buddies... seeing what they can do with the icing!
Nate loves decorating... he especially loved mixing all of the icing!
Look at all of those cookies!

Watch out or Kami will get us with the red icing!
ICING....lots and lots of icing! And lots of love. This family is such a blessing, a gift that brings joy and love that makes everything so much more wonderful!

Frosting everywhere... especially all over Nate's face!

Winding up his middle school basketball carreer!!!

Well... it wasn't everything he had hoped it would be
and not everything it could have been even...
But Willie played his heart out every time he got to get out on the court
and having heart and desire is a good thing and gets you somewhere!
If you have the heart, and the desire, and practice hard
you will eventually be exactly where you want to be!
Willie loves sports...
he watches sports,
reads about sports,
talks about sports, and plays them too.
Unfortunately he hasn't had as much 'formal' experience
as he would have liked.
But he gave it his whole soul and did really quite well!
The last game was a rough one...
they played their rival,
and may I mention this particular rival has a distinct advantage
like a team who has played together for a very long time.
Some of them practicing with the high school team
where fathers coach... and the very distinct height advantage I'm sure didn't play
any part in it at all...
although when the 6ft 4inch boy purposely body slammed my son
it took all I had to not go over to him and show him some of the moves
my dad had taught me to take care of bullies like that!
But like a trooper he played on with a loose tooth and a pretty beat up nose.
Because when you go in to play,
You go in to play tough!
But he will continue to practice
and find the place where he wants to be
and he is willing to work for it
and do what he needs to do so he can be the type of player
he wants to be!

So he plays his part out on the floor for the moments he is in there,
And he tries to learn as much a he can while he is given the opportunity.
And he plays with heart...
And desire!
And those are some pretty good qualities to have when you are finanly ready to play with the big boys!

Guard your man,
stick with him like glue and never let him get away with anything!
And run like crazy to keep up with the other team! :) 2 points for...what did they call it? Slamming you to the ground???
But you made them both and that will show them!
This would be the time mom thought she might have to jump in...You know it's bad when the other team even boos their own player... when a well over 6 ft boy purposely takes down a very NOT over 6 ft boy down, as in purposely go after him to cause pain and hitting him in his already bruised nose and taking him down. Of course the precious free throws (he was making on the picture above), both of which he made
did make us feel vindicated... but not much!
23 purposely took Willie down to prevent a shot... but it was a cheap hit!
Way to go Willie for handling yourself like a pro!!!

Happy Birthday in Heaven Grandma

I woke up this morning and remembered it was grandma's birthday...
and while I felt like crying, I had to smile!
My grandma was the way a little kid thinks a grandma should be.
I loved going to grandma's house!
She did what a grandma is supposed to do...
love you, and make you feel like you are the greatest person ever!
I find myself singing songs to my own grandson that
my grandma sang to me.
She taught me nursery rhymes and read to me
and rocked me and sang me to sleep.
I remember as a very little kid how safe I felt with her.
Grandpa died before I was born,
but because of her love for him, I felt like I knew him.
She never stopped loving him and never wanted to be with anyone but him.
I always wanted to love somebody the way she loved grandpa!
I remember sitting on her lap while she read to me.
One day when I was very young I read an entire book
to my mom and dad.
Grandma thought it was funny letting them think I knew how to read.
But it was because she read it to me so much that I had it memorized.
She told me one time that after I was born
my mom told her not to rock me the whole time she had me
because it would spoil me.
She said that she would rock me the whole time they were gone anyway.
She told me that she felt like Heavenly Father sent me to her
after He took grandpa home.
Sometimes I feel like she is very close
still watching over our family.
Happy Birthday in Heaven today grandma!
Know that we love you and miss you!!!

And.... he's three!!!

Nathaniel Adam ~
Our sweet little man is 3!
He showed us miracles of Biblical proportions~
He teaches us everyday of acceptance and love and gratitude and joy!
Everyday... still... we look at him and feel the miracle of his life
and are grateful for all that we learned by walking through the trials.
We feel absolute joy when he barges into the house
after being gone with one of his sisters and yells,
"We are home!!!"
We are so grateful for his love~
and he truly loves!
He accepts everyone,
he pulls them into his heart and shows them unconditional love.
Even as young as he is!
He brings joy to our home.
Who knew that we could love so much someone that we never even knew
was missing!
3 years later,
and we still look at him as our miracle
and count our blessings everyday.
He makes us smile.
He makes us laugh.
He adds so much to this home!
Happy Birthday little man.
Thank you for being such a fighter,
for teaching us by your example,
for loving us so much!
We love you!!!!

Nate kept telling us he wasn't getting into the cake...

we did make him wait until Garrett and Jace got off work...
so he had stared at this cake for hours.
But his green tongue and the missing frosting was a dead give away
that he had been into it...
but he laughed and denied it!

We told him to show us his tongue...
he covered his mouth and refused to open it.
I think he mostly just loved the attention
and how much he was making us laugh
by covering his mouth!
Nope, nothing green here!

Notice the finger marks in the frosting???
Happy Birthday to you...
And he blew the candle out!
May all of your wishes come true...
Always!
Love you little man!
And thank you for giving me the great gift of
deciding you will be potty trained today!
Nate got his new Cozy Coupe that he had wanted.
He calls it a jeep.
He is suddenly obsessed with Jeeps
Because Jace got a Jeep.
The only problem was that
Gabe suddenly became obsessed with the Cozy Coupe also!

This is called a temper tantrum!!!
Nate tried to convince him to ride on a different toy
But Gabe was going to have nothing to do with that!
Our sweet little Gabe has a temper when he doesn't get his way!!!
Lucky for him,
Nate pretty much gives Gabe his way, always!
Gabe got his way...
Back on the 'jeep'
ready to ride!

Gabe wasn't convinced to play with the other toys
Nate brought out for him...
Nate knew to pick his battles
so he let Gabe ride in the back
and let Jace push them around the house!

What a great uncle...
Even though he loved his 'jeep'
he was willing to share with his 'Babe'....
Our sweet little man is THREE!!!

He asked... she said yes!

Tanner got down on one knee tonight
and officially asked Celeste if she would marry him.
She said YES!
June wedding maybe???

What a week...

It feels like the days have ran into each other over and over again...
I had to think about what day it was today!
We have been on the go constantly since last week.
With Thayne's bad back to boot!
I started out the week, last week,
with a killer migraine.
It has been a while since I had a headache like that...
it was bad even by my standards!
By Wednesday we were still trying to get Thayne into a doctor
and finally we were able to get him in to one in Reno.
A fast and furious trip, 4 hours one way and home the same night,
but at least we got to see Kimi and Matt and
scheduled the surgery.
Friday we went with Caitlyn and Jace to Salt Lake
and got to go to a Utah Jazz game.
They played a great game and won for us too!
Thankfully we were at the top so Thayne was able to get up
when he needed to.
Saturday was a great day for a wedding
and we got to see Tony and Cherish married in the
Bountiful Temple.
It was beautiful and the bride and groom look
blissfully happy and in love!
Then hit the stores and malls to do some power shopping.
And Caitlyn loves to shop! It was as fun to watch her
as it was to get some shopping done!
We finally made it home at about midnight.
Church and home and packing to leave early Monday morning
so we could be there for surgery.
Or would we???
They called from the doctor's office to tell us that the doctor
was snowed in and no flights were leaving Chicago so they didn't know if
he would make it back.
Monday morning on our way, we called at 8am
and they told us the surgeries were on and to come on over.
We got there at noon and waited... and waited.
At 3pm they took us to the first phase of waiting. Gown him up,
answer all of the questions and wait to be taken to pre-op holding!
They were supposed to start the surgery at 3pm.
Thayne was not comfortable... hadn't ate since Sunday...
no pain meds, no nothing. The nurse kept walking by looking at him... and at 3pm
said they should be right back to get him.
She had explained a new system they have, where if you feel left alone,
forgotten or had questions to just dial 5 and they would send someone to come and
answer your questions.
At 3pm Thayne started asking for a phone.
I thought it was weird since he wasn't drugged up or anything so he
shouldn't be so 'weird' asking for a phone.
At 5pm the nurse realizes that we were still waiting.
She comes back and Thayne tells her he wants a phone!
She laughs, and asks why he wants phone.
He tells her that he is feeling neglected and alone and he wanted a phone to dial #5!!!
She laughed.
I wish I could have caught her eye to let her know he wasn't joking!
Nor was he in the joking mood!!!
She tells us she has bad news.
That the doctor was there, barely.
And was just starting surgery #1...
Thayne is patient #3!
At 7pm they take him to the 'pre-op holding' which means they moved him
to another big room and left him on the bed staring at yet another
wall and nobody anywhere to answer any questions.
We are waiting... a holding pattern... not another person there but we were holding.
And that was a good thing right???
At about 20 after 7 the anesthesiologist came in...
Can I just say that hearing someone who is supposed to be a professional start screaming
at a nurse because a cupboard was locked and using four letter F words
is a real turn off and a horrible first impression.
But whatever he gave Thayne knocked him out quickly. The little cocktail to relax him
put him completely out!
Waited for the doctor to come and tell me what he was doing ...
And then I went to the waiting room.
Thankfully a friend called and kept me company while I waited alone... for hours...
and hours...
Around 10pm the doctor came out and said the surgery had gone well. I was relieved and had a million things to ask but before I could put my thoughts together he said that I could go into recovery, he had told the nurse to get me and let me see him in recovery and then I could get a good nights sleep. I told him we would be staying at our daughters.
He said I would, but he was keeping Thayne over night. And then he was gone.
So I waited... walked the halls, waiting...
Finally a guy came in with the chart literally an inch in front of his eyes and says that I
must be waiting. Yes... I am, for Thayne. Oh Thayne, oh yeah, that is him!
So I follow him up to the 4th floor where they put on the best circus show I had seen in
quite a while....
They tried to take his bed into the room to move him to the regular bed. It had been noted that he did not come out of anesthesia very well. But the nurses looked at me like
I didn't know what I was talking about. So I just stood back and watched them put on the show.
First the bed wouldn't fit into the room going the way they were trying, head first. So after
much thought and consideration they turned the bed around and the one nurse kept
telling Thayne to wake up and put his arms over his chest and pick up his knees... he couldn't
even open his eyes, let alone help them move him!
When they realized he wasn't understanding a word they told him,
4 of them decided to
move him.
At one point I held my breath afraid that they were going to drop him.
And I have to say that I hated seeing my sweet husband like that.... competely out of it!
Not cool at all... I was not happy about that!
Well, while the one nurse took his vitals and tried to get some paperwork done,
the male nurse was trying to get the new bed working...
he lifted it up, as far as it would go,
then down, as low as it would go,
up down, up down, and every so often he would bang on the bed
just to see if THAT would maybe fix it.
But it didn't.
So Thayne was flat out on the bed unable to move.
As he came to they told him that he could give himself a dose of morphone,
and they would try to find someone who could fix the bed.
Thayne was just coming to and said that lay flat on his back was in horrible pain.
So I told him to push the button and get some relief.
He couldn't even think to push the button and told me to please just push it! I moved his finger over it and helped him push it.
Then 2 nurses come back and decided that he needed yet another bed,
hopefully one that actually worked.
But again they had the space issue so we watched another show as the 2 nurses tried to decide how to move him from one bed to another.
They finally decided to bring Thayne and his bed out into the hall
and moved the other bed into the room.
Then slip Thayne in feet first to get him onto the other bed.
He was actually able to scoot and get to where he needed to be
even though we were laughing by the time it was over!
FINALLY he was in bed and ready relax.
Nurses have the most thankless job ever, I know that.
But there are some, that give the rest of them the reputations that we were dealing with that night/day!!!
I finally went to Kimi's and got there at midnight
where the wind was blowing so fast and furious I started dreaming about being Dorothy
and was so exhausted that my mind kept playing tricks.
I thought the house was moving or that the van would blow away.
It was horroble rain and wind!
And I was worried about the storm blowoing in!
At 7am Thayne still hadn't seen anyone and while check out was 11am,
they were talking about 4 pm getting out.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! 4 was too late!
We finally got them to agree to around noon.
He could get up and get moving and there were no problems so he should be able to get out about noon.
Noon came.
The nurse informed him
that he needed to wait 1/2 hour for the antibiotics to finish going through.
They finished.
It kept beeping to let the nurse know it was finished... and beeped and beeped.
He had his pants and shoes on and the nurse told him she would take, not the iv out,
but the cords attaching him to anything.
She told him he had to walk around the unit.
Obviously she had missed seeing him walking around.
When she finally came back in we reported that he had been walking, going to the bathroom, pacing... and at long last she said they were ready.
I asked where to pull my car around and she told me it would be at least a half hour before she could get the paperwork done.
So Willie and I left to get lunch and came back as she was finishing the paper work and finally, at long last we were busting out of that place!
The surgery was a little more complext than we originally were told.
He is already healing quickly, the nerve pain is gone and it is now just healing up from the actual surgery!
And I am so glad he has it done and is on his way to healing.
He hardly uses anything for the pain and is trying hard to take it easy
so that he can be up and running soon!!!
We were able to get on the road and beat the winter storm before it hit us!
4 hours later we were home with the family....
nothing better than seeing our kids wiating there for us.
I am so happy Thayne is on his way to mending and feeling good .
We made it home, and now I want to just sleep...
rest for a few days
and then jump in to finishing all of my work for the big day that is coming way too fast!
It has been a week!
A long, long week!
So grateful Thayne is feeling good and grafeful that the surgery went so well
despite the crazy of it all.
What a week it has been... is it over yet?????

His heart is already big!

Nate's sweet little heart is already big...
the Grinch he is not!
This little boy never ceases to amaze all of us
and it's hard to believe that he will be 3 on Friday.
Today we got some packages from the post office.
One of them contained some shoes I had ordered Nate
for his birthday.
They are cute little Pumas
and he saw them before I could put them away.
He told his dad and me that they were so cute.
Thayne told him they were for Gabe and
would that be okay?
Nate said, "Yes, Gabe will look so cute in these..."
And he meant it!
He was perfectly fine to put them back in the box and give
them to Gabe.
He did the same thing the other day when he happened to walk in
on me while I was wrapping presents.
He saw some trucks and asked what they were for.
I told him Christmas.
He told me,
"Oh, Gabe will like those!"
He has the most grateful heart.
And the most giving.
He is so unselfish and sweet and
I love that he can teach all of us
how to love and give without conditions!
My little man... his heart has always been big and
he seems to understand that giving makes us the happiest!

The date is set

The date is set for Thayne's back surgery.... on Monday!
We made a fast and furious trip to see the specialist today
and it was decided that nothing will really help
except surgery.
(A couple of ruptured discs and the nerve damage...)
The sooner the better... no reason to wait.
I guess he could drag it out and be off work for a while
but really, that's not how he works.
And I saw the joy in his eyes when he said
he could probably be back to work by the first of the year!
Yep... the man can't sit!
Oh, he would be more than happy to be home
if he could be up doing something.
But since he can't, he is just ready to fix the problem and get on with living!
It was fun to get to see Kimi and Matt for a quick late lunch too!
Can't wait to have Thayne feeling better!!!

His Back

Well, we knew it was coming. He was lucky to avoid it for several years longer than they said he would, but it has finally gotten to the point that he can't ignore it anymore and Thayne will be having back surgery again, in the doctor's words, "Sooner, rather than later." He has had a few bad episodes where the pain pretty much knocked him down. But the Wednesday it was so bad he could barely walk and Thursday found us in the ER for an MRI to find out exactly what is going on. They got him in a whole lot faster than we expected and had the results very quickly. He has a bulging disc, but that isn't the worst part. A piece of the bone spur has broken off and is sitting on the nerve which is causing the horrible pain down his right leg. We are now waiting to hear back from the specialist to see how quickly we can get him in and how soon we can set up the surgery. There is no way it can be put off much longer or he won't even be able to move. The doctor hopes that ones that piece of bone is removed from the nerve that the nerve will regenerate and hopefully the damage won't be permanent! He keeps going despite the pain but I know that it is getting to him and I hope they can take care of him soon!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
At least at our house!
And the snow outside seemed to push us
to get the tree up.
Thayne and I always banter about how 'much' stuff
goes on the tree.
I like a lot!
Is that so suprising that I like a lot??!!
I did downsize the number of nativities and stuff
this year because well...
I just did.
I even downsized the stuff on the tree! :)
But it is so wonderful to sit in the living room
in the evenings
with the lights shining from the tree
and Christmas music playing.
It makes me want to enjoy the sweetness
and the goodness that comes from this holiday...
and makes me wish that we could just always
remember that the Savior is the reason for everything that we do.
And not get so caught up in all of the 'stuff' that
comes this time of year!
