Gruesome pictures of Jace's leg... not for the weak of heart!

The kids constantly asked for pictures of Jace's leg while we were away. Personally I think they are kind of sick. Though I surprised myself and was able to handle watching all of the medical procedures they performed on his leg without losing my cookies. I am amazed at what they can do to a body. Our friend had the finger that he lost minus the bone sewed to the back of his finger for later use. Jace said that every doctor, every nurse, every EMT were positive and helpful except one doctor who, while he was in extreme pain tried to lecture him about guns. He told her that he did not want to hear it yet she tried to continue. He was hurting badly and finally told her that he would not, and did not have to listen to her rantings and that doctors killed more people than guns did! (that's my boy!!!)

Mostly his leg just looked fake. Like something you would see on ER knowing that it was all made up. It was interesting to see the muscle flex or have spasms... literally the muscle, outside of his leg! It looked plastic.

The first morning after the initial surgery his leg was just wrapped up a lot, and was oozing and bleeding but they said that was normal.
We told Jace he didn't make a very attractive drug addict... he was pretty out of it most of the time, on what he lovingly called his Dalai Lama drug. We told him that we could use his pictures to discourage drug use because he looked so funny and talked in a high pitched voice and laughed at the funniest stuff! This is Jace with his Build a Bear named Kinikini! He was mad when he found out we took the picture, he said a Build a Bear is appropriate if he was 8... but not 21! :) It was more for our entertainment, not for his comfort!
This is what the fasciotomies look like...not pretty, looks like a shark bite!
Then they were able to sew up the outside and part of the inside... and then put the wound vac on... and the entrance wound is still open, they want it to heal up on it's own.

That's crazy! Thanks for sharing the gory details. It's good to know I'm not the only one who would think nothing of blogging their childs injuries!

Yikes! That's pretty awful!

Lets hope this discourages gun use, not just drug use!

Kim,
You don't know me but I've been reading your posts on Babycenter for about 7 years. I may not agree with you on guns but this is America and I respect your right to gun ownership. I feel so bad for the physical pain that Jace is going through and the emotional paid the rest of the family is suffering.

Please know that the thoughts of this "stranger" are with you and your family.

That. looks. sweet. My boys have all been going through scar/story envy.

Of course, knowing he is out of the woods helps them to just think it's "cool".

Praying Jace's leg heals quickly, my goodness, that looks painful. You can sure tell he is in agony. I live in Canada and don't really understand the right to ownership of guns, ect. But I do know you and your family are wonderful people. Just curious how Jace's girlfriends parents reacted?

You are in my thoughts,
Haley

Ah, lokks so painful. My friend's husband had a wound vac on the back of his neck and I know that first dressing change, he said it felt like someone was trying to saw his head off it hurt so bad.

Guns are not the only thing that cause injury, my oldest daughter cut her leg to the bone with a metal ramp part of her bed. She had a slice from one side to the other below her knee and you could see her knee cap and tendons. Gross yes, but Jace's looks much more painful. She *only* needed stiches no double surgery.

I sure pray he feels better soon and I pray for all of you as well as you try to take care of him!
