Despite some seriously heavy rain, we made it home safe and sound yesterday afternoon to a wonderfully clean house and happy children, including extras, as my sister's boys had been here all weekend and the kids still managed to hold everything together!
I am just going to put this out there... I am sick of the medical profession! We have been in almost constant contact with doctors over Jace's staff infection. It wasn't until we really insisted that they take it serious that they finally wanted to see him... the nurse told him even if it were MRSA they wouldn't tell him. WHY? He brought up the sores on his donor site several times at the burn clinic and they didn't even acknowledge him telling them. The clinic here did the best the could I suppose, but this is where the nurse told him they wouldn't be upfront if it happened to be MRSA.... they treated him with the right meds, just not long enough, and they told him it was 'only' staff infection. He went back last Friday and the clinic gave him a cream to put on the huge sore on his knee. A CREAM?! By Saturday it was so much worse and finally after phone calls to Salt Lake, they wanted him over there. After sitting in the ER until 3am Sunday morning they were able to get him into an observation room after doing a million tests and poking and prodding his knee.
What it all comes down to is that the burn doctor casually mentioned that they had a LOT of people who had skin grafts have shown up with MRSA. WHY??? Why aren't they obligated in some way to tell the patients this??? And WHY did they blow him off in the first place when he told them about the sores? Why are they not in some way held accountable when they know what is wrong??? They told him that another 24, possibly 48 hours it would have become critical!!! Surgery... even amputation could have become necessary and they just didn't bother telling anyone that MANY graft patients have developed MRSA at the graft site! Does that not tell you something? Does that not suggest there may be a PROBLEM? This stuff is deadly... and one nurse is saying that nobody will admit to it anyway, and a doctor says it so casually he could have been talking about the weather! This could have cost my son his leg!!!! I am so grateful that in the end we finally got answers, and that we were able to catch it in the nick of time! Literally in the nick of time!
I still feel I am trying to wash the ick from the ER from me though. Last night I started itching just thinking about the person flopped over the seat, skin a little grayish and yellow throwing up into a bowl on the floor. Oh it was yummy! Or the woman that came in and they insisted that she wear a mask AND that her husband put one on... but they let the person cough and throw up for close to an hour all the while flopped on the chair, then half way on the floor then back on another chair. Oh ick... and who cleans that place? We were there for hours and there were just lots of germs... but they had signs everywhere asking you to do the patients a favor if you are SICK... and not stay there! I have to admit it made me laugh that plastered all over the ER are signs asking sick people to leave!!!! What a concept they are developing.. If you are sick, get the heck out of the emergency room!!! And it's interesting the type of people show up in the ER as the hours go by. During the day it's just accidents, illnesses... and as the night goes on, the whack-o's show up. Did I mention that Saturday was our anniversary??? :) What a way to spend our 23rd wedding anniversary! We recognize the blessings though and are grateful that this nasty bacteria was caught before it took his leg!
